It says that artists (“we are the culture squad”) are needed in a society to make everyone feel the life in colours, with a present mind and heart, for “roses” are needed as much as bread.* The technoburlesque show Image Snatchers is a series of constantly changing and evolving episodes, now already in its sixth season. It is a modern take on burlesque, packed with witty feminist-inspired campy and queer humour and often critically commenting on the current socio-political landscapes and events both locally and beyond. The numbers enact actual political figures, like Angela Merkel, Melania Trump, and the local culture minister on one hand, or more general but psychologically detailed roles on the other, such as a chauvinist macho, a slow-walking grandma, or an android with a drinking problem. The music is sometimes used as a ready-made and an important reference to specific past era, scene or its vibe. Lip-syncing makes an appearance too and so do electronic bootleg edits or remix tracks. Popular songs are sung live, sometimes with lyrics changed to various degrees, whereas at other times completely original music is made by the collective. He works as a sound technician at Radio Študent, where since 2017 he has been running the club and electronic music show Party Line and organising the Cosmic Sex series of club events with Jaša Bužinel. It is impossible to think about moving and movement, about identity, growing up and growing older and not think in terms of the body. In an intertwinement of manifold experiences, images, and topics, some of them individual and specific and some shared by all the performers, the sense of time is revealed through the body. Ageing is always fresh; there is always another layer of dust that has to be blown off, another wrapping concealing excessive invisibilities that has to be undone… If for An Aged Woman in Mina Loy’s poem the past has come apart, the future is inexploitable, and the present pain, the makers of this performance remain upbeat when faced with the challenges of life. After a long period of oscillation between emergence, forgetting, gestation and rewriting, and alongside later songs, at least some have now found their place and form. Some songs were originally created for specific dance-theatre performances and were later given new lyrics and additional melodies. For instance, The Night of the Soul emerged in 2007 during a creative process at the Grotowski Institute’s Atelier programme in Poland. The simple melody of Vsemu kar je blizu (a short poem by Hafiz) was composed for the performance Rodeo by Maja Delak and Mauricio Ferlin in 2007, while the melody and part of the lyrics for Just the Way It Is were developed during the process and as part of the performance Out of Discord with Joséphine Evrard in 2010. The first audio fragments and drafts of Happiness were written around 2006, as were the drafts for the song Počasi. The rest appeared sporadically, in pieces and fragments, over the following years. Song Realnost iluzij, is based on Anja Novak’s poem of the same name and is part of her interdisciplinary poetry collection Rane rane (Wounds Wounds).
